Gardens are, without a doubt, a beautiful place to relax in. A garden can also provide endless enjoyment to your entire family or even community. The idea of having fragrant flowers, lush vegetation and a mini-sanctuary in your own back yard is a dream that is not out of reach for anyone. However, one of the things that is often overlooked when planning your backyard sanctuary is the fact that YOU, as the gardener, need protection from those very plants that you love.
Gloves, in particular gardening gloves are one of the most important items that any gardener can purchase. The process of choosing the right glove can even be a little difficult—especially if you are new to gardening. There are, however, a few tips that can make buying your gardening gloves easy.
The best type of gardening gloves should be made from very good quality leather. There are many much less expensive types of gloves out there that are canvas or cloth of some sort. The cloth, though, is a permeable material, and therefore not best suited to the tasks you have (forgive the pun) at hand. They must also be gloves that can be used for whatever gardening task you encounter. Buying a pair or two of good quality, leather gardening gloves that have a cloth backing to them will allow your skin to stay cool and comfortable when you are gardening.
There are some gardening gloves that are made specifically for certain tasks, such as rubber gardening gloves. These gloves are made for wet conditions, like working in mud or after it rains. This will mean muddy and very wet gardening, therefore muddy and soggy hands if your gloves are permeable. For this kind of task, choose a thick rubber glove with an inner cotton lining that will be waterproof on the outside, but will allow your skin to breathe on the inside.
Neoprene gardening gloves are another specialty glove. These kind of gloves are made for use with pesticide and chemicals. Keep in mind that typical rubber and plastic gloves will not ensure protection from chemicals like neoprene will, so don’t chance it, get good gloves.
Another thought when purchasing gardening gloves is this—if you tend roses or other thorny bushes, consider getting gardening gloves with an extended arm/wrist protection, that will protect your arm as well as your hand from thorns and cuts.
The only other tip that you need to consider when you choose your gardening gloves is to see that they fit your hands correctly. Remember that gardening gloves truly are a gardener’s most trusted tool. They will not only help to protect your hands from dirt, mud and thorns, they also aid in the prevention of painful blisters and even infections. So please, choose your gardening gloves with care!
